A traditional state powerhouse and A Big Ten (TM) player used strong field performances this past weekend to move to the top of the TPR(C) Rankings for the Week 4 edition of the rating system’s score-sheet.
Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) continued it’s string of strong performances this season with a home victory against last week’s #2 rated Michigan Tech. 23 – 7, the COLLEGE FOOTBALL WRAP-UP’s(c) “Game Of The Week” to capture the top spot in this week’s ranking. The victory also coincides with the school’s return to the AFCA’s Top 25.
Joining SVSU in the # 1 position is Sienna Hgts. University. SHU is also coming off a strong performance, on the road, against St. Ambrose (IA). The Saints are also nationally regarded, ranked # 22 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll, prior to the St. Ambrose game.
The biggest gain of the week was posted by the new # 2 team in the state, the Big Ten’s MSU. Michigan State’s impressive performance against Northwestern, a 31 – 10 road victory, garnered a 15.5 TPR Point Score and raised it’s season average to 9.75, securing the # 2 spot in this week’s ratings.
# 3 Albion maintained its lofty ranking turning back Eureka (IL) at home in a 56 – 41 victory in a game that may have been the coming out party for possibly the state’s best brothers-teammates combination. Quarterback Kyle Thomas threw for 313 yards and 5 TDs, including 4 TDs to WR (and brother) Justin Thomas, who also had 171 receiving yards in the game. Along with Kyle’s 144 rushing yards, and 3 TDs, the two accounted for 12 TDs and 628 yards of Total Offense between them!
Hope’s Flying Dutchmen, last week’s # 1 team slipped to # 5 despite it’s second victory in a row, beating Aurora (IL) 34 -32, by scoring only a quarter of the TPR points that it did in it’s record-shattering victory over Defiance (OH) 80 – 6. The victory against Aurora (IL) was in a game dubbed, the MIAA – NCAA Crossover Showdown.
# 6 GVSU and # 8 Ferris State are rounding their squads into shape, and moving up in the TPRs, heading towards their inevitable clash for conference (GLIAC), state and national playoff positioning in the annual ANCHOR-BONE Classic. This year’s game is November 9th at 1PM in Big Rapids (Ferris State’s Campus).
# 11 Wayne State rode an impressive road victory against previously unbeaten Quincy (IL) into near Top 10 positioning and as well as a CFWU’s Week 5, GAME OF THE WEEK match-up with # 1 SVSU.
# 14 WMU slipped from the Top Ten (# 8 in last’s ratings), despite unleashing an offensive juggernaut against Syracuse on the road. The Broncos fell to the Orange 52 – 33, while accumulating over 550 yards of offense.
# 17 CMU (down from last week’s #12) turned in a stalwart performance in a road loss to the nationally regarded Miami (FLA) Hurricanes, after being left for dead against Big Ten powerhouse Wisconsin, another road game, just two weeks prior. The Chippewas are in their first season of new Coach Jim McElwain’s tenure and look to be getting a feel for the new culture.
